FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Hikes can be done at a varied pace. The outing can be at a relaxed or at a faster pace. Generally, a slower pace involves fairly frequent rests, especially on hills. An average pace is 3 km per hour but this depends a lot on the slope, condition of the path (e.g., rocky), altitude etc
Lengths of hikes can be tailored to fitness levels also. Its best to discuss with your guide as to your expectations in this regard. The aim is to have an enjoyable outing that extends you if that is what you expect or else a more moderate pace if that is what you request.
This will depend on the hike chosen. In the case of certain parts of the Drakensberg and other more remote wilderness areas, there are no paths.
If permits are needed your guide will facilitate the obtaining of these, and the cost of this will be in the hiking fee.
We can reschedule or refund with a 25% handling and admin charge. If permits were paid for, the National Park / Nature areas do not refund and we thus cannot refund.
Its best to wear layered clothing that you can add or take off as the temperature changes. A raincoat is always a must even if no rain is predicted as these provide cover for wind as well. Sun hats are essential even when it is overcast. Note that in cold temperatures, heat loss through your head can be a factor that can be solved by a good beanie or warm hat. Jeans are not suitable and you should rather bring a lighter-weight pair of trousers or shorts that can dry quickly. Synthetic material tops are also preferred over cotton tops as they dry more quickly.
Note that brightly coloured clothing usually shows up well in photographs.
Hiking boots are ideal but a good pair of tackies will also suffice for day walks and/or well-defined paths. Off-path hiking is best done in more robust hiking boots. It’s advised that you wear-in new shoes before embarking on a hike to avoid unnecessary blisters. If possible, wear two pairs of socks.
The guides are trained in mountain rescue and first aid and will assess the situation and if need be, immediately contact the rescue services.
